Calico a go-go

When a girl can't pick which fabric to buy, shouldn't she just buy all of them?
And when this same girl can't decide which buttons she should buy, shouldn't she just buy all of them too?
And then what if this girl finds these super cute vintage patterns.  Must she pick one?  Nah...just buy all of them.
Girls, I have been spoiling myself but I didn't even have to crack open the piggy bank.  Don't ya just love it when that happens!?
Sweet calico perfect for summer tops and a dress too; $3.79 a yard.  Yippee!
Vintage buttons; 20 cents a pop then discounted to just 10 cents a pop because the lady said she had never seen such enthusiasm for buttons.
Adorable vintage patterns; $2 each.
Woo hoo!

Tomorrow guess what I am going to do.
Sit in a car for 8 hours eating popcorn and sewing yo yos.  Jealous?  Didn't think so.
We are driving to LA to visit my in-laws.  I am determined to make this little road trip fun, darn it!
See ya next week!

All Dolled Up!

Hi!
Lately, the only photos I have of myself consist of me in my bathrobe holding my dog.  Um...yeah...great for the personal family album but not so good for the blog.  Besides, I think about when I am old and I want to show my grand kiddies what I looked like before everything headed south and the middle age spread hit.  I don't want the only photos of me in my thirties to be either bent over in the veggie patch or in my bathrobe and bunny slippers.  So, I took matters into my own hands and attempted a self portrait while sitting in the car in front of our house waiting for DH to get the directions to the party we were headed to.
I forgot to take off my seat belt but at least I cropped out the neighbor's garage contents.  Like I was sayin...this was very impromptu!
Here goes...
This is me girls.  Christina (aka Cece) Van Doren age 32 sitting in my driveway.

My attempts at looking glamorous resulted in looking like something was stinky.
So, I opted for a more "natural" expression.

Posting photos of my smiling mug on my blog is a challenge of sorts for me.  Granted, I know I am not a total "mud fence" or anything but like many women, I am my own harshest critic.  As the years go by though, ironically, as I start to look older I simultaneously start to feel more confident.  Maybe confidence is the wrong word, I think it might be self acceptance.  I joke that my legs are meant to be plowing fields.  Long and lanky I am not! But hey, it is what it is.  I'm just going to take good care of my farm girl legs and if I want to show them off in all their glory, darn it, I'm going to.  I am thinking of challenging myself to post more photos of myself here on my blog.  I by no means have a model figure but I am really trying to just focus on my health and accept me for who I am.  And ya know, I want to see your pretty selves too.  We may not be supermodels but we are real women leading real lives and we should not be shy about it!  I want to see you too!

Ok, I will get off my soap box for now.

On an all together different note...my friend Karen and I had a blast at the Alameda Antique Fair.  I wish I had taken more photos.  I kind of go into sensory overload mode when I am there so I sort of forgot.  But!  Lookie what I bought!  (drum roll please!)

The photo is not doing our new chandelier justice.  It is sooo darn cute!  (Hubby...it isn't really "cute" what I meant to say is that it is cool, and um...modern, yeah...that's it, cool and modern.)  Oh, dear...poor Hubby.  He married such a girl!  This chandelier is going to look so incredibly perfect in our dining room!  To heck with a super formal dining room I say.  I mean really, who are we kidding?  The last few holidays I have served food barefoot for goodness sake!  So, our dining room is slowly morphing into a cozy, sunshiny, and family-ish space.  And now it is going to have a daisy light fixture!  Yippee!

If we had a little girl I would have snatched this up in a heart beat!
How cute is this vintage trunk?

Blog_56_8_3

I have always wanted a vintage trunk.  Even when I was a little girl I wanted a trunk.  I have this romantic (and inflated, I'm sure!) vision of a girl accumulating her cherished lifelong mementos in an old trunk.  Especially a trunk with little dutch girls and daisies!  ***sigh***

I wanted to take this puppy portrait home but alas, I settled for a photo of it.  I thought it might offend Poppy Flower and Ginger.  They are not white and fluffy like this dear girl so I would feel guilty.  I don't want to make my little pound puppies jealous!

I want to share photos of my other flea market purchases but I think I will wait for another day as I have already rambled enough for one day, for sure!

Have a lovely day girls!

Fluffy Girl

On Sunday after the farmers market my mom and I went to one of our favorite vintage shops. I purchased a few little bits of vintage fabric to incorporate in some bag designs I have in mind. And than I happened upon this sweetie. Isn't she lovely! Like many of you gals out there in blogland I collect vintage cards and Valentine's Day cards are my favorite! I love that she is on the phone and the little phone cord is still in tact. She's so pretty, I want to look like her! And I want her dress too! (I'm such a little girl at heart!)
This morning, while putting her on display in my sewing room I noticed that on the back it reads, "To our Fluffy Girl. Love, Mommy and Daddy" Isn't that the sweetest! It just conjures up such an image for me of this darling girl in the 1940's and her loving Mom who purchased this card because it made her think of her "Fluffy Girl." What a nickname! I confess...I would love it if my family nickname was Fluffy Girl! It would be quite fitting really. Alas, my family nickname is...Snicklefritzee. I know..."special" name right! Snicklefritzee does not have the same lovely connotation as Fluffy Girl but that is okay. I will always be my Daddy's Snicklefritzee!

ebay addict

As everyone who knows me knows; I am a true vintage addict.  For years I was a bit sheepish about this because well, some people find that to be goofy or even eccentric.  But in the past couple of years I have really come to embrace my penchant for "vintage."  It is part of who I am!  I feel incredibly blessed to be a woman in today's world and just happen to be drawn to the past aesthetically speaking.  Anywaaays...I am slowly decorating my house in almost entirely vintage and antiques.  I want everything (accept for appliances, and mattresses!) to be old.  My latest justification is that I am helping keep new things from being made!  I honestly think that is a noble pursuit!  We waste so so much and if we can just find beauty and usefulness in things that already exist...well, that is just a beautiful thing!
For a vintage loving gal like myself ebay is both a blessing and a curse!  What took me years to find, I can now find with just the click of a mouse!  So, I do have to let even some of the best treasures get away sometimes.  I think it is fun to see what things go for though.  So, I thought I'd share some of my favorites with anyone out there who may care to take a gander along with me.

For years I have wanted these Fireking Tulip Nesting Bowls.   I have never ever seen them in brand new condition with the original box!  They went for $151.  I know that is a lot for bowls but if I had $151 to spend on bowls I absolutely would have!

I adore tulips.  I've adored tulips since I was little but now with a last name like Van Doren I like them even more!  This little vintage Vitrock Red Tulips Grease Jar went for $16.50.  Worth every penny to me!

I happened upon a head vase at a estate sale years ago for practically nothing, like $3 bucks.  I was immediately smitten but had no idea they are such collectors items!  Since then, I have collected a few more.  I adore these two Lefton head vases and they went for $45 for the pair.  I still don't have the whole head vase pricing thing figured out.  Sometimes they go for crazy amounts like $200 and than I will occasionally find one for only $20.  Whatever...some are more collectible than others.  When in doubt I just buy what I like!  I wish I had won these two!

Another thing I collect is vintage crochet potholders.  I never actually use them for their intended purpose but they are so sweet I have amassed quite the collection over the years.  I've decided that once we paint our little pantry I am going to hang my collection up around the top of the wall like a border trim of vintage potholders.  (Hopefully my husband will just never look up because I don't know how much he is going to like that!  He's always so sweet about my vintage stuff but I don't want to push it!)  This collection of 11 potholders went for $25.  That is pretty good considering they are usually about $5 -$7 a pop in antique stores.

I've always wanted to try coloring in my crochet the way they did in the 30's-40's.  I've read that you literally can just use a crayon and than iron it in.  I'm not getting how that would hold up when you wash it?  If anyone has any tips on that please let me know!  Anyways, I think this vintage throw pillow is a sweetie!  Cottage images just make me so happy!  It sold for only $12.50 and had 4 bids.  So sweet!

Blog_1115_cottage_pillow

In keeping with the cottage theme; Home Sweet Home motifs have always just made me happy.  North, South, East, West, Home always is the best!  Sorry, that was cheesy but it's true isn't it!?  I would love to have a vintage embroidery like this one to hang by my door where we keep our coats and keys.  This one went for $25.  Imagine how sweet it would be with the frame painted; perhaps a sagey green.

Every day I am truly thankful to have been born in a country where we have all the comforts and freedoms that my generation too often takes for granted.  I'm not always proud of the political decisions we make here in America but I will always feel blessed and grateful to live in this great country.  This Old Glory Crewel work would be so charming to display around the 4th of July wouldn't it?  It went for $23 and had 3 bids.
